The hard slab of rock beneath him was solid; it was real and tangible and there. The sky above him, the sharp Tython sun that he would have felt hot against the back of his neck and heavy on his shoulders had he stopped to sense it. But suspended between stone and sky he felt more mirage than man. There one moment and gone the next only to reappear as he lost focus, lost the willpower to find enough of himself that was solid, enough of him that was real to be made unreal. Meditation wasn’t helping today, not in the face of the new knowledge that had settled in the forefront of his mind and refused to be set aside like so many other things he’d been able to tuck back in order to follow his own path.

This was the boulder, the army, the impassable blockade set square in his road. He was a Shadow trapped in the spotlight glare of the sun.
